Today is day 159 of my exile.
Exile 159.
Nineteen fifty-nine.
In Germany, the year is marked by the consolidation of division. In the Federal Republic, Adenauer’s third legislative term begins a phase of political stability, sustained by economic growth and Western integration. Prosperity increases, while dependence on international alliances and security commitments grows at the same time.
In the German Democratic Republic, the socialist state continues to be expanded. Collectivization and the planned economy reach deeper into everyday life, political control is systematically organized. Emigration to the West continues and heightens the leadership’s nervousness, without any visible solutions having yet been found.
Between East and West, the system conflict on German soil intensifies. Berlin remains the most sensitive point, both symbol and instrument of pressure. Both German states become projection surfaces for larger power interests, whose decisions are not made solely in Bonn or East Berlin.
Internationally, the year is shaped by the logic of the Cold War. Military alliances, nuclear deterrence, and diplomatic crises define global politics. The revolution in Cuba shows how regional upheavals can trigger global reactions.
Wars and conflicts do not arise from a single will. They grow out of the interests, fears, and miscalculations of many actors. Nineteen fifty-nine, too, is a year of missed understanding and gradual hardening.
Exile 159.
German division shapes everyday life and politics in 1959. Stability in the West, control in the East, tension in between. Internationally, a system of mutual deterrence continues to solidify.
