Today is day 216 of my exile.
Exile 216.
Two thousand sixteen.
The year is marked by political upheaval and growing uncertainty in Western societies. Decisions long considered stable are being questioned, while political dynamics accelerate and new lines emerge.
In Germany, the developments of the previous year continue to have an impact. The migration issue remains central, as do the social and political tensions arising from it. Differences between East and West become more pronounced, particularly in political attitudes and election results, reflected in growing support for new political forces.
Europe remains under pressure. The consequences of migration, economic issues, and security challenges overlap. At the same time, it becomes clear how difficult it is to find common answers when national interests move more strongly into the foreground.
Internationally, the year marks a turning point. The referendum in the United Kingdom leads to the decision to leave the European Union. In the United States, Donald Trump is elected president, calling political certainties into question and reshaping existing tensions.
These developments show that political stability is not a fixed state, but must be continually renegotiated.
Exile 216.
A year in which the familiar shifts and the new has not yet found a firm place.
2016 shakes political certainties. Germany tense, Europe under pressure, new directions worldwide.
