Exil 184 Collage zum Jahr 1984 mit Bezug auf Kalten Krieg, Deutschland Ost und West, NATO Nachrüstung und internationale Spannungen

Today is day 184 of my exile.
Exile 184.

Nineteen eighty-four.

The year stands under the sign of a frozen world order. The Cold War continues to shape the relationship between the power blocs, but beneath the surface, shifts are beginning to emerge. In Moscow, the death of Yuri Andropov leads to new uncertainty within the Soviet leadership, while in Washington, President Reagan continues his confrontational course while also signaling a willingness to engage in dialogue.

In the Federal Republic, Helmut Kohl consolidates his position after the early election in March. The deployment of intermediate-range missiles remains controversial, but the protests of previous years are losing momentum. Economically, a phase of relative stability continues, driven by strong exports and cautious fiscal consolidation.

In the GDR, a different picture emerges. Economic pressures are increasing, the supply situation remains strained, and many people quietly look for ways out. Open confrontation is avoided, but the structural problems of the system are deepening. At the same time, the leadership seeks international recognition and economic ties with the West.

Around the world, conflicts and crises shake the order. The war between Iran and Iraq continues to claim heavy casualties, the Soviet deployment in Afghanistan drags on, and in many regions debt crises are intensifying social tensions. Wars and blockades arise from power interests, security fears, and the historical experiences of many of those involved.

Exile 184.
Sometimes it is precisely the stagnant years in which the quiet signs of coming change begin to gather.

1984 remains in the shadow of the Cold War. In Germany, stability in the West and stagnation in the East stand side by side. Beneath the solid surface, however, shifts are already beginning to emerge.
