Today is day 196 of my exile.
Exile 196.

Nineteen ninety-six.

Germany is still living at two economic speeds five years after reunification. In the eastern federal states, restructuring, unemployment, and structural disruption continue, while in the West many political decisions about the shared future are being made. The government is pushing ahead with reforms, and with the IPO of Deutsche Telekom one of the largest privatizations in German economic history begins.

Berlin is visibly changing. The city is gradually preparing for its role as the political capital while ministries, construction sites, and planning projects shape the new center of the republic. Between remembrance, new beginnings, and financial burdens, it becomes clear that unity was not only a political decision but a long societal process.

In Europe, the European Union continues working toward the planned common currency. Countries are trying to meet the economic criteria of the Maastricht Treaty, while crises such as the BSE epidemic shake confidence in political governance. Questions about regulation, responsibility, and cooperation are growing louder.

Thus, the year 1996 shows a world in transition, shaped by economic change, geopolitical reordering, and many open questions about the direction of the coming decades.

Exile 196.
History often moves forward quietly while the present is still trying to understand where the path leads.

In 1996, Germany continues to grapple with the consequences of reunification while Europe prepares for the euro. Globally, new lines of power are emerging from Russia to Afghanistan. Transitions shape the year more than clear decisions.
