Exile200 – Marla’s Journey Through Time

Exil 200 Collage zum Jahr 2000 mit Berlin als politischem Zentrum Deutschlands, Euro-Vorbereitung, US-Präsidentschaftswahl Bush gegen Gore und internationalen Konflikten

Today is day 200 of my exile.
Exile 200.

Two thousand.

The world enters a new century. Many people look to the new millennium with anticipation, while states try to define their role in a changing international order. In Germany, reunification is still not a distant memory. The political and economic balancing between East and West remains a central issue.

Berlin continues to develop into the center of German politics. Government, ministries, and institutions are permanently establishing themselves in the capital. At the same time, the country is debating economic reforms, labor market problems, and the restructuring of social systems. Differences between regions remain visible, but infrastructure and investment are gradually changing the image of many East German cities.

Internationally, globalization is creating new interconnections. The European Union is working on further integrating its member states and preparing the introduction of the euro as cash in the coming years. Economic markets are becoming more closely linked, while political decisions increasingly have effects beyond national borders.

In the fall, the world’s attention turns to the United States. The presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore ends with an unusually close result. After long legal disputes, the Supreme Court ultimately decides the outcome of the election.

Other regions are also facing upheavals and conflicts. In the Middle East, the second Intifada marks the beginning of a new phase of violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Such developments show that political tensions rarely arise out of nowhere, but grow from long histories, interests, and unresolved questions.

The world enters a new century without having fully answered the old questions.

Exile 200.
The beginning of a new century often feels quieter than history later makes it appear.

In 2000, a new century begins. Germany continues working on aligning East and West, while Berlin becomes the definitive political center. Internationally, a disputed U.S. election and new conflicts in the Middle East shape the year.
