Today is day 221 of my exile.
Exile 221.

Two thousand twenty-one.

The year is defined by an ongoing state of exception in which political decisions and societal responses continue to be heavily shaped by the global situation. At the same time, signs of fatigue and growing tensions emerge as a result of the prolonged crisis.

In Germany, measures, debates, and adjustments continue to shape everyday life. Discussions about restrictions, vaccinations, and social responsibility remain prominent. Differences between East and West reemerge, particularly in trust in government decisions and in how developments are handled.

The federal election further shapes the political year. After a long time, there is a change of government that signals new priorities and directions. At the same time, it becomes clear that political change rarely happens abruptly, but that existing structures continue to have an effect.

Europe remains in a field of tension between collective coordination and national interests. Measures are coordinated but implemented differently. The question of unity and ability to act remains.

International dynamics continue to shift. The withdrawal of Western troops from Afghanistan marks a turning point, while other conflicts persist. Global developments once again show how closely political decisions are interconnected.

This year makes it clear that transitions are rarely clearly recognizable.
Exile 221.
A year that knows no fixed point between ending and new beginning.

2021 remains in a state of exception. Germany elects a new government, tensions persist. The world searches for a transition.
