Today is day 222 of my exile.
Exile 222.
Two thousand twenty-two.
The year is marked by a profound rupture in the European security order. War visibly returns to Europe and reshapes political, economic, and societal perspectives in a short time. Decisions are made under intense pressure as old certainties continue to dissolve.
In Germany, priorities shift significantly. Energy supply, economic stability, and foreign policy orientation move to the forefront. Particularly in eastern Germany, differing assessments of these developments emerge, shaped by historical experiences and economic dependencies. The discussions become more intense and reflect a range of perspectives.
Europe responds in unity, though not uniformly in every detail. Sanctions, energy issues, and military support become central topics. At the same time, it becomes clear how deeply interconnected the states are and how difficult it is to maintain common lines amid differing interests.
Internationally, existing tensions intensify. Relations between major powers come under further pressure, while economic consequences are felt worldwide. Supply chains, energy prices, and political alliances shift noticeably.
This year shows how quickly fundamental conditions can shift.
Exile 222.
A year in which the world realigns while many things are simultaneously thrown into uncertainty.
2022 brings war back to Europe. Germany and Europe respond, and the world changes noticeably.
