Today is day 223 of my exile.
Exile 223.
Two thousand twenty-three.
The year is marked by ongoing tensions and a further shift in global balances. Conflicts continue, while economic and political uncertainties limit the room for action of many states. Stability increasingly appears to be a temporary condition.
In Germany, economic issues are moving more strongly into focus. Energy prices, industrial development, and debates about Germany as a business location shape the political discussion. At the same time, differences between East and West continue to emerge, particularly in political attitudes and societal expectations.
Europe remains shaped by the consequences of developments in previous years. Support for Ukraine, energy policy, and economic adjustments define the course of action. It becomes clear how strongly decisions depend on one another and how difficult it is to maintain a unified approach.
Internationally, lines of conflict continue. The war in Ukraine remains central, while other tensions, such as in the Middle East, are once again moving more strongly into focus. Global power dynamics continue to shift, accompanied by economic interests and political strategies.
This year shows that change is rarely complete, but continues to evolve.
Exile 223.
A year that keeps going without ever truly arriving.
2023 remains tense. Germany struggles economically, Europe is under pressure, and the world is in constant motion.
