Today is day 170 of my exile.
Exile 170.
Nineteen seventy.
The world stands between rigid bloc confrontation and cautious diplomatic opening. With the Moscow Treaty, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Soviet Union begin a process of détente born from the experiences of two world wars, from Germany’s division, and from the dangerous logic of nuclear deterrence. Borders are recognized not out of idealism, but from the understanding that stability in a divided Europe can only emerge through mutual safeguards.
In Warsaw, Willy Brandt kneels at the Ghetto memorial. This gesture symbolizes a political shift that does not occur in isolation, but is embedded in the strategic considerations of Washington, Moscow, and the European capitals. Détente is not a unilateral act, but the result of mutual interests, economic constraints, and the recognition that confrontation remains permanently risky.
At the same time, the war in Indochina expands. The United States strikes targets in Cambodia to disrupt supply routes, while North Vietnam maintains its position. Alliance systems, ideological differences, and regional power dynamics overlap. Wars emerge from long histories, from miscalculations, and from the decisions of many actors.
In this year, Marla Svenja Liebich is born in Merseburg. A personal new beginning amid global political tensions and, for many, a high point in the history of the GDR, which asserts itself within the structure of the Eastern Bloc while simultaneously striving for international recognition. While treaties are signed, wars are fought, and balances of power are calibrated, a single life begins, embedded in the structures of a divided Germany and a divided world.
Exile 170.
And so, at the beginning of a new life, stands a year that, between confrontation and rapprochement, seeks its own quiet place in history.
