Today is day 172 of my exile.

Nineteen seventy-two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year is marked by cautious rapprochement between the power blocs. In Europe, d\u00e9tente is taking shape, while the world continues to live in the shadow of the Cold War. Talks between the United States and the Soviet Union on arms limitation show that deterrence and dialogue can exist at the same time. Yet stability remains fragile, as mistrust and strategic interests persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Germany, the new Ostpolitik shapes the political climate. The treaties with Moscow and Warsaw take effect, and in the Basic Treaty the Federal Republic and the GDR move closer institutionally without abandoning their differences. It is an attempt to acknowledge reality without fully relinquishing claims. These steps arise from decades of bloc confrontation, from the construction of the Wall, and from the realization that permanent isolation offers no solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Globally, too, balances are shifting. The visit of the American president to China alters the strategic architecture between Washington, Moscow, and Beijing. In Vietnam, however, the war continues, driven by ideological rivalry, geopolitical interests, and regional dynamics. Wars have many fathers, and their causes run deeper than individual decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe seeks economic stability as the enlargement of the European Community is being prepared. The postwar order remains in motion, not because of a single actor, but through the interplay of power, fear, and the desire for predictability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
