Exile 183.
Nineteen eighty-three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The year 1983 is marked by a new ice age between East and West. The NATO Double-Track Decision leads to the deployment of intermediate-range missiles in Western Europe, while the Soviet Union builds up its arsenal in response. In both power blocs, concern grows that technical misinterpretations or political miscalculations could trigger an unintended war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Federal Republic, the peace movement reaches its peak. Hundreds of thousands protest the deployment of American Pershing missiles, while the federal government under Helmut Kohl holds firmly to its alignment with the West. Security is defined in different ways\u2014either as military deterrence or as political d\u00e9tente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the GDR, the leadership remains focused on stability, yet economic weaknesses become increasingly apparent. Dependence on the Soviet system limits room for maneuver, while many citizens navigate daily life between conformity and inner distance. Germany remains divided\u2014politically, economically, and socially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Internationally, events such as the shooting down of the Korean passenger aircraft KAL 007 intensify mistrust between the superpowers. At the same time, talks behind closed doors show that both sides are striving to maintain control. Wars have many fathers, and they often emerge from chains of decisions, fears, and strategic calculations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Exile 183.
The world holds its breath and trusts that reason will remain stronger than escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1983, the Cold War intensifies with new missiles in Europe. In East and West, politics and society struggle over security and stability. Between deterrence and dialogue, peace remains fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
