In the Federal Republic, Helmut Kohl is re-elected Federal Chancellor in January, while economic stability and security alignment with the West remain the guiding principles. In the GDR, the leadership under Erich Honecker tries to keep reform impulses from Moscow at a distance. Glasnost and perestroika are changing the tone in the Eastern Bloc, but in East Berlin, adherence to the status quo prevails.

In April, the Chernobyl reactor disaster hits Europe. Radioactive contamination reaches both German states and exposes differences in how information is handled. Uncertainty shapes everyday life, schoolyards remain empty, food is inspected. Environmental issues gain political significance—debated in parliament in the West, more strongly driven by church groups in the East.

In October, the meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik draws attention. Even without an immediate agreement, it becomes clear that disarmament has become negotiable. The Cold War remains a reality, but the willingness to talk changes the strategic landscape. Security arises not only from strength, but also from communication.

Meanwhile, West Berlin experiences a sign of international connectivity with the opening of the ICC. The inner-German border remains in place, yet the year shows how profoundly global developments reach into everyday life in Germany. Major conflicts are rarely the work of a single individual; they arise from interests, fears, and decisions made over decades.
