Exile 190.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nineteen ninety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Europe is experiencing a year of profound upheaval. The order of the Cold War is visibly dissolving, while political systems, alliances, and economic structures are set in motion. Many developments of this year did not emerge suddenly but are the result of long-standing tensions, reform attempts, and the power interests of various states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Germany, the question of unity moves to the center of politics. After the events of the previous year, borders open not only symbolically but also institutionally. On July 1, the economic, monetary, and social union between the Federal Republic and the GDR comes into force and changes the everyday lives of millions of people within just a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, the former Allied powers of World War II negotiate with the two German states over the external conditions of German unity. The Two Plus Four Treaty in September formally ends many postwar arrangements and creates the diplomatic foundation for a sovereign German state. On October 3, the German Democratic Republic accedes to the Federal Republic of Germany, and national unity is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the year does not change Germany alone. In Eastern Europe, political structures of the Soviet sphere of influence increasingly dissolve, and several states begin to search for their own paths. Reform policies in Moscow, economic pressure, and national movements act at the same time and drive developments forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outside Europe as well, balances of power are shifting. In August, Iraq invades Kuwait and triggers an international crisis that shows new conflicts emerging as old bloc confrontations disappear. The world of nineteen ninety is a transitional period in which old fronts fade and new uncertainties become visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Exile 190.
History rarely moves in straight lines, but sometimes years condense into turning points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1990 becomes the year of German reunification and the visible end of the old East\u2013West order. Diplomacy, reform pressure, and the power interests of many states together shape the transformation. One era comes to an end while a new one begins uncertainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
