In many cities, the end of the war in 1945 is commemorated, while at the same time a new political landscape has emerged, shaped by the dissolution of the old bloc confrontation. The discussion about responsibility, remembrance, and a shared future accompanies this year in many countries.

In Germany, East and West are still in the process of growing together. Economic upheavals, structural losses in the East, and political debates about the pace and direction of unification shape everyday life. At the same time, Berlin is visibly developing a new role as the political center of the reunified country, while the wrapping of the Reichstag by Christo and Jeanne-Claude draws worldwide attention to the German capital.

Foreign policy is also changing. The Bundeswehr participates in the implementation of the Dayton Agreement as part of international missions aimed at ending the war in Bosnia. This development shows how strongly Germany is now integrated into international security structures and how much Europe’s role is shifting after the Cold War.

Worldwide, the year remains marked by tensions and turning points. The Dayton Agreement ends one of the bloodiest conflicts in the disintegrating Yugoslavia. In Russia, the war in Chechnya continues, while in the Middle East the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shakes hopes for a stable peace process.

At the same time, new structures of global cooperation are emerging. With the founding of the World Trade Organization, another attempt begins to organize economic rules internationally. History once again shows that political stability rarely arises from single decisions, but from long chains of interests, conflicts, and compromises among many states.

Exile 195.
And while memories and new orders stand side by side, the world slowly continues moving through its own history.

In 1995, Europe remembers the end of the war while at the same time grappling with the conflicts of the present. Germany searches for its role between remembrance, unity, and international responsibility. History does not end; it only shifts its stages.

Exile 194

Exile 193

Exile 192

Exile Chronicle
All previous (from 130 – earlier entries are on X/Twitter) and ongoing entries of my Exile Chronicle are collected and documented here:

 Marla Svenja Liebich
is the author and publisher of Marlas Army.
On Marla’s Army, she publishes analyses, commentary, and personal accounts on social and political developments in Germany.

Heute ist der Tag 195 meines Exils.Exil 195.
