Today is day 191 of my exile.
Exile 191.
Nineteen ninety-one.
The year 1991 is marked by a world in transition. The Cold War, which had shaped the international balance for decades, is visibly dissolving. States are reorganizing their relationships, old alliances are losing their sharpness, and new uncertainties are emerging.
In Germany, this is the first full year after national reunification. East and West are growing together politically, but major economic and social differences remain visible. In the new federal states, a profound restructuring of industry, administration, and everyday life begins, while in the West the costs and consequences of this transformation are intensely debated.
Political lines in Europe are also shifting. In 1991, the Soviet Union falls into a crisis that ultimately leads to its dissolution. From a superpower, several independent states emerge, changing the strategic balance of the entire continent.
Internationally, it also becomes clear that the end of the bloc confrontation does not automatically bring stability. The Gulf War at the beginning of the year shows how regional conflicts can quickly gain global significance. Power interests, economic dependencies, and old tensions remain part of international politics.
Thus, 1991 stands between new beginnings and uncertainty. Old structures disappear faster than new ones can emerge. Many hope for a more peaceful order, while at the same time it becomes clear that history rarely unfolds in a straight line.
Exile 191.
1991 marks a world in transition. Germany struggles with the consequences of reunification, while the Soviet Union collapses and the end of the Cold War becomes visible. Hope and uncertainty shape this year at the same time.
